About Martin

The Bugman

I have always been mad about wildlife and spent many hours pond dipping and bug hunting when I was young, actually I still go pond dipping and bug hunting.

I have watched and studied wildlife for many years and I always wanted to show other people the things I was seeing. I got the chance to do just that when I became Education Officer for Essex Wildlife Trust at Fingringhoe Wick Nature Reserve and Visitor centre near Colchester.

I devised and developed an extensive educational programme for schools and created Wildlife Discovery Days which I ran during every school holiday and at weekends. I also developed activity evenings and days for youth groups such as Cubs and Brownies.
These are all now used at Centres throughout Essex and beyond.

During my 15 years there I taught over 5,000 children on school visits and around 1800 on Wildlife Discovery Days and youth group visits each year.

In May 2003 I decided it was time to leave the trust to set up Martin Rapley - Experience Science Live. As you can see from this site I now take a whole range of shows and activities into schools, museums and events and it has been a great success. I now work with around 50,000 children in schools and another 30,000 children and adults at events each year!

I have written the first two in a series of wildlife books aimed at children, teachers and parents. These first one - Martin The Bug Man's Guide to Big Bugs - is available now. They feature stunning photographs by Dan Ambrose, a friend of many years, Dan also created this website.

I became a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society in 2006.
